An Island Home

Katie Morag DayOn Monday 23rd November we had our fantastic Katie Morag Enrichment Day in Year 2!  This term we have loved learning all about Katie Morag and her adventures on the Isle of Struay.  To make the day extra special we all came dressed as different characters from the stories.  There were some lovely Katie Morag’s, Granny Islands, Neilly Beig and a wonderful Granma Mainland with her ‘fancy ways, even the Big Boy Cousins made an appearance!  The outfits were amazing - all of the classrooms were brimming with tartan and wellies.

To start the morning we cooked and tasted delicious bowls of porridge and we also tried some crumbly Scottish shortbread biscuits and oat cakes.  Continuing the Scottish theme we held our very own Highland games on the Key Stage 1 playground.  The ‘welly-wanging’ competition was loved by all and our champion ‘welly wangers’ were Lottie-May, Jayden and Max.  We then tried out our dancing skills with a ‘Highland Fling’, this helped to warm us up on such a cold November’s day!

In the afternoon we designed our very own ‘Island Home’.  Drawing carefully the outline of our island, we thought about different human and physical features and we used a key and show them. We also had a fantastic time designing and making our very own tartan.  Using strips of coloured paper we weaved it into some beautiful Scottish tartan and we were incredibly proud of how well they turned out!
