Maths workshop at Bourne Academy

As part of our Maths, Year 5 had the opportunity to visit Bourne Academy and take part in a Maths workshop. It was an absolutely fantastic experience. We became mathematicians for the afternoon and learnt how to make our own hexagons and pentagons.

Working together collaboratively, we made many 2D nets for a 3D shape from paper and card to create a truncated icosahedron which looked a bit like a giant football! In geometry, the truncated icosahedron is a shape that is made from two or more polygons and identified by its faces. It has 12 regular pentagonal faces, 20 regular hexagonal faces, 60 vertices and 90 edges.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable afternoon which gave us a great insight into what Maths is like at secondary school.
