Children’s Writers and Illustrators Group (CWIG) - Reading for Pleasure Award

The Society of Authors is a trade union for professional authors of over 10,000 members.  Around 11% belong to the CWIG and these authors regularly visit schools across the country delivering talks and workshops.

They believe that reading is the core skill that liberates all aspects of education so they have established a simple award scheme that allows individual authors to commend schools that excel in this area.

Judith Brulo visited our school on 28th September 2017. She was so inspired by our commitment to reading for pleasure that she has given us this award with the following citation:

‘This is a Primary School with a difference. The staff are whole-heartedly and enthusiastically committed to nurturing a love of reading. The library has been extensively refurbished to provide an exciting and inspirational environment for children to develop a passion for reading.  The school takes part in various themed days and Buddy Reading sessions and Teachers’ Favourite Snippets assemblies are highlights.  The school has a curriculum with high-quality texts as the focus, including those written by Michael Morpurgo, Roald Dahl and David Walliams.

The School also uses Educational and author visits to bring topics and stories to life, including visits to Cadbury World, museums and Burghley House.

They create their own budding authors by entering a variety of competitions, both in house and externally and each class creates a snugly reading area.  Recent favourites include: Platform 9 3/4, an air raid shelter, the Chocolate Room and a mystical fairy tale forest.’

I am sure you will agree this is a superb achievement and as a whole school community, we will continue to inspire all our pupils to develop a life-long passion for reading.
