Water, water everywhere!

During their workshops they learnt about where our water comes from, the importance of water, what we can do to be water wise and Anglian Water’s role in this process.

Year 1 had a fantastic time learning about the importance of water. They became ‘water investigators’ using their sense of smell and taste to work out what had been added to different water samples. They then met Captain Splosh and learnt about why water is important in keeping us healthy.

Children in year 3 thought about how much water we use and waste. They took part in a water quiz, sorting activity and discussed how they could be more ‘Water Wise’ and less ‘Water Waste.’

Year 5 had an excellent day learning about Water linking to their new topic. The children recapped their learning on the water cycle, learnt about the process of Anglian water cleaning, discussed how the planet’s climate effects water and even discussed sewage and what goes down our pipes. The children were shocked to find out if we left the classroom tap on for 2 minutes we could waste up to 9 litres of water. That’s up to 7000 litres of water a year! Each group was then set a challenge to see if they could clean paint pots using as little water as possible. The challenge was harder than it seemed, but helped the children realise just how much water we waste doing every day activities. Everyone agreed they would make an extra effort to reduce the amount of water they waste each day and made their own pledge.

The Anglian Water Workshops were an excellent opportunity to further develop our focus on reducing water waste within school. Alex Worrall (Eco Schools Coordinator) stated ‘the workshops helped the children to understand their role in preserving water in an enjoyable but informative way.’
